Chapter Summary

This introduction to the third section provides an overview of the key concepts discussed in the chapters grouped under this section. This section discusses what Demetrius' ideological stance, when viewed alongside his career, might suggest about developments in Byzantine society. The first step that must be taken is to establish that there are sound reasons for seeing Demetrius' ideological stance as part of his public persona, familiar to his contemporaries. If Demetrius' opinions were largely unpublicised, it would be unnecessary to read his public career in terms of his intellectual stance. However, if Demetrius' ideas were well known, this would suggest that his ideas are of wider significance for the developments of the period, since this would make his intellectual stance of direct relevance to the progress of his career.

Keywords: Demetrius' ideological stance; intellectual stance; public persona
