Chapter Summary

The question of the apparition of the risen Christ to Virgin Mary arises from the interpretation of a passage from the Gospel of Matthew, and to a much lesser extent, its synoptic parallels. The appearance of the risen Jesus to women as recounted in Matthew 28: 1-10, raised two types of issues both among the former than among the moderns. The first problem comes in reference to the problem of the virginal motherhood of Mary the mother of Jesus. The second problem comes in reference to the problem of the absence of Mary the mother of Jesus among the myrrh-bearing women. The issue of an apparition of the risen Christ to the Virgin Mary has aroused the enthusiasm of researchers and has been the subject of considerable controversy, at least at one time. The original text of the chapter is in French.
