Chapter Summary

The Transitus Mariae narrates the event of the Ascension of Jesus and that of the Assumption of Mary. This chapter focuses on facts concerning the dogma of the Assumption defined by Pius XII. It groups all the texts under the generic name of 'History of the Dormition and Assumption of Mary'. In these texts it is possible to distinguish three doctrinal categories, based on the following concepts: the Dormition or resurrection; Dormition and Assumption; and the assumption or without resurrection. These three concepts concentrate on the Christian belief in the final fate of Mary and also on the concept of afterlife. In the Transitus Mariae, resurrection is sometimes represented simply by the union of body and soul. This meeting shall be final and not temporary, as is the case for dormitionistes Syriac texts in which Mary is temporarily resurrected to visit the scene of the above, namely heaven and hell. The original text of the chapter is in French.
