Chapter Summary

In early December 1849, Alexandru C. Golescu-Albu, the strategist of the Romanian diaspora interned in Asia Minor, addresed a collective letter to his two brothers, his cousin and his friend Dumitru Brătianu, in Paris. The year 1849 ended on a sobering note: the Hungarians and the Italians had been defeated, and the Romanians abroad were bracing themselves up for a long exile. On 28 December 1849, Hermione Asachi, the future wife of Edgar Quinet, wrote to Athénaïs Michelet, commenting on the public tribute paid by Michelet to his friend Auguste De Gerando Teleki in his lecture of the previous day at the Collège de France.
