Chapter Summary

This is the introductory chapter of the book which focuses on the transition of China's diplomacy and foreign relations, which are closely associated and mutually reinforced with changes that have taken place in China. It discusses some specifics of the transition in foreign affairs. The book includes diplomacy in the narrow sense, referring to the system and operation of the foreign affairs department, but it covers more areas, such as diplomatic system and thinking, international exchange, international strategy and international concepts. China's foreign affairs and international relations can be studied from different channels and perspectives. The book adopts the broad perspective to study the historic evolution of China's foreign affairs in ten major areas, which, though not covering everything, seems to me, to represent the most important things in the transition.

Keywords: China's diplomacy; China's foreign affairs; international exchange
