Chapter Summary

This chapter aims to pay homage to a young Dutch Jewish woman whose religious conception of life merged immaculate and precise thinking along with a superior power of poetry, creating resonances, which, are often quite chilling. In Etty Hillesum's writings, we witness, every step of the way, ever more subtle, ever more accurate, ever more luminous, the gesture of decanting (her image) that she employs in everything that happens, in everything that happens to her. Why is Etty Hillesum a great thinker? In her testimony, we are able to seize the foundation, the ethical principles and the critical conditions of genuine thought. We must emphasize Etty Hillesum's incessant search for words, which stems from the understanding that words are unable to bestow what they describe and, at the same time, comes from the refusal to lose herself in that understanding, the result of which would be silence.

Keywords: Etty Hillesum; precise thinking
