Chapter Summary

It is undisputed that Etty Hillesum has become one of the most emblematic figures of a spirituality for our time. This chapter identifies at least some of the reasons of such a radiance, referring to the exact meaning of the word 'reception', which is not yet familiar in current French. A first aspect to consider is the fact that we are dealing with an itinerary, a personal journey, or more correctly, with a search for meaning, "een spirituele zoektocht". Another aspect of the actuality of Etty Hillesum's testimony is her consciousness and her experience of the bodily foundation of the experience of the self, the other and the world. The secret of Etty Hillesum's radiance consists fundamentally of her dedication to making her life, as she wrote, "one long hearkening unto my self and unto others, unto God.
