Chapter Summary

A conspicuous characteristic of post-communist transformations in Central and Eastern Europe since 1989 has been the parallel - though considerably varying - revival of nationalism and religion. This chapter outlines the multiple modernities perspective that emphasizes the continuing relevance of sacred - be it in religious or secular-religious, pluralist or totalizing forms - layers in modern collective identities pertaining to religious communities, social movements, ethno-national groups or transnational civilizations. It considers the main types of empire-contracting nation-state formation and their relation to nationalism, religion and secularization in Central and Eastern Europe. The chapter compares them to various cases of peripheral nation-state formation and their relations to nationalism and religion in East Central and South Eastern Europe. It considers the differing impacts of inter-civilizational interconnections and global forces in these empire-contracting and peripheral cases of nationalism, religion and secularization.

Keywords: globalization; nationalism; post-communist Europe; religious communities; secularization; transnational civilizations
