Chapter Summary

Many new developments in the religious arenas are taking place in the contemporary scene - developments which entail changes and which herald a new civilizational constellation. Several phenomena formed the common core of processes that transformed the hitherto prevalent hegemonic patterns of social relations and institutional frameworks. The crystallization of the patterns of social relations and of institutional patterns were closely connected with new cultural developments which started in the West and then expanded throughout the world. The specific characteristics of contemporary globalization include the predominance of new forms of international capitalism, and the tendencies to the global economic neo-liberal hegemony promulgated among others by the major international agencies. One of the most important manifestations of the new civilizational framework has been the close interweaving between the numerous new religious constellations, and the new types of orientations and movements of protest that first developed in the late 1960s.

Keywords: contemporary globalization; cultural transformations; new civilizational constellation; new religious constellations; protest movements
