Chapter Summary

This chapter is devoted to the examination of book collections registered in the clerical probate records covering the district of Nedenes and the county of Jarlsberg. It first classifies Jarlsberg book collections recorded between 1704 and 1722, collections which were owned by a clerical class that presumably received its education in the period 1680-1710. Then, the chapter analyses book collections listed in the Jarlsberg clerical probate records in the period 1723-1738. Ten inventories recorded in the Jarlsberg clerical probate records in the period 1723-1738 give information on book collections, and these collections belonged to agents who occupied various positions within the clerical hierarchy. Finally, the chapter analyses book collections registered in the Nedenes clerical probate records for the whole period 1693-1740.
