Chapter Summary

This front matter section of this book Shange, the Mountain Songs contains table of contents, list of illustrations, preface, and acknowledgements. The book shows that Shange is marginal firstly because it cannot be included, strictly speaking, in the Great Tradition, as it is mostly written in a local dialect. The marginality of the collection also reflects the marginality of many intellectuals of the time, as Ōki has demonstrated in his 1996 essay.
