This chapter includes biographical listings for prominent Karaites who were religious or communal leaders, or of nonspecific or varied background. Some of the prominent Karaites mentioned here include: Krym, Solomon Samoilovich; Lutski, Joseph Solomon ben Moses; and Gumush, David Markovich. Krym, Solomon Samoilovich is the most famous Karaite politician and public figure. He is also a specialist in agrotechnology and viticulture, and was nominated several times for the position of Crimean hakham. Joseph Solomon ben Moses is an important Karaite scholar, and is also the author of a travel diary describing the Karaite mission to St. Petersburg in 1827. Gumush, David Markovich is a Karaite educator and communal activist from Sevastopol. He is a well-known amateur translator of the works of nineteenth-century Karaite and Rabbanite authors.
