Chapter Summary

In this chapter, the author challenges the wide-spread contemporary view of a Babylonian provenance of Isa 4055. Through a careful study of the textual evidence, the chapter endeavors to show that the eight arguments cannot stand up to close scrutiny, whether treated alone or taken altogether. It follows that the accepted view of a Babylonian provenance of Isa 4055 rests upon a shaky foundation and thus cannot be sustained. Moreover, the chapter brings attention to several hitherto neglected aspects of the text that suggest a Judahite provenance of Isa 4055. A Babylonian provenance of Isa 4055 has not always been the consensus.

Keywords: Babylonian provenance; Isa 40-55; Judahite provenance
