Chapter Summary

This chapter aims to reveal the reality associated with data policies, data accuracy, and authenticity validation - analysing the tendency for each, to identify gaps to be filled and then to propose improvements. The recent trend in the field of remote sensing saw the proliferation of data use and growth of the data market. Data policies determine the rights and obligations for data providers and recipients. The practice of most data generators is that data supply and use is regulated through contractual agreements. They do not just release their data in an uncontrolled manner, but retain control over the data and products after distribution to the users. Data generators attempt to seek protection for their products, which are the results of significant financial investment, and their technical achievements. The chapter explores the issues of data reliability and mechanisms for data authentication and validation.
