Chapter Summary

Until today, very few studies have addressed the dynamics of ethnic Chinese business networks. This chapter attempts to fill part of this gap by presenting data on the business network evolution over time, covering the historical period before, during and after the Asian Crisis of 1997–98. It makes use of qualitative and quantitative longitudinal case data of the Salim Group, one of the largest ethnic Chinese firms in the Asia Pacific region. This chapter addresses the question how ethnic Chinese networks change over time and in periods of economic and political crisis. It reviews different network theories applied to ethnic Chinese business. The chapter introduces the case and methods used to obtain and analyze the data and present the case results. It offers a discussion of the results, and finally, it provides suggestions for future research.
