Chapter Summary

An emigrant from Russia Alexandre Bennigsen gathered an excellent team of scholars able to study Ottoman, Crimean, as well as Russian sources and initiated the edition of documents from the Topkapi Palace Archives regarding the Crimean Khanate. This chapter presents Document 29, which comprises a letter of agreement between His Royal Majesty and Sahib Giray Khan. The letter has been designed in Cracow through the great envoy Ali Hadji. It states that all the merchants from the Polish or Lithuanian state may come with their merchandise to Perekop and to Caffa, conduct their trade there and freely return home, having paid the ancient tolls.
