Chapter Summary

An emigrant from Russia Alexandre Bennigsen gathered an excellent team of scholars able to study Ottoman, Crimean, as well as Russian sources and initiated the edition of documents from the Topkapi Palace Archives regarding the Crimean Khanate. This chapter presents Document 58, which comprises the letter of agreement written in the abode of Baghchasaray by Khan Islam III Giray and sent to King Vladislaus IV. Khan Islam III Giray expresses his view that peace, brotherhood, and friendship can be maintained only if King Vladislaus IV observes his oath and punishes his villains.
