Chapter Summary

Paul and his writing have had a great influence on the development of Christianity. Revelation is undoubtedly a key book for Christian thought, and it had a very important role in the construction of a Christian philosophy of history. The millennium interpretation relies on the opposition between premillennialists and postmillennialists, i.e., whether the reign of the thousand yearsthe millenniumwould come before or after or the second coming of Christ, respectively. The beast as described in Revelation is commonly identified as having a double connotation: on one hand, it represents the collective Roman Empire, while on the other hand it represents Nero. In Revelation , the author tries to depict a theory that divides time into two different ages (one in the past and one in the future), plus an intermediate period that represents the present, marked by the covenant with Christ.
