Chapter Summary

This chapter discusses the friendship 'between particular humanists, developed and expressed in an exemplary manner in alba amicorum amicitia. Vulcanius had multiple contacts with members of the Flemish Brabant and community in exile. The amicorum albums', ultimate expression of this friendship, maintains clear linkages, although complex with poetry. All these forms of written communication, in fact, bear the mark of the exchange in a living community. It consists of collections of emblems on the same principle. The letters written in Basel by Vulcanius show us how eagerly it follows the events of his time, particularly those relating directly or indirectly to the homes of anti-Spanish resistance. He is passionate about what happens to the Palatinate, land of asylum for Protestant refugees, for the reception which several monasteries around Heidelberg have been cleared of their occupants. The original text of the chapter is in French.
