Chapter Summary

This chapter examines the changes affecting the North African temples during late antiquity, using archaeological data, supported if necessary by inscriptions and texts. It focuses on archaeological problems, especially the dating of the transformation of pagan religious sites Christian sites. The chapter focuses on indications of preserving the pagan heritage to the middle of the 4th century and attempts to protect the temples, under the guise of conservation for aesthetic purposes and preservation of antique buildings. It presents detailed case studies of the Aegean and the conversion of pagan temples in six sanctuaries of the Islands Province, placing them in the context of the debate on the motion of the Christianization of Asia Minor to the Greek mainland. The chapter examines the fate of some statues of pagan deities and heroes who were exposed in the streets, squares and public buildings. The original text of the chapter is in French.
