Chapter Summary

This index presents the list of names, terms and concepts of sustainable waste trade. The generation of waste is intrinsically linked to economic growth and development and reflects everyday production and consumption patterns. Between 1995 and 2000 the amounts of waste collected and disposed of in Europe increased by 2% per year on average. Household wastes alone amounted to an average of 423 kg per capita. Waste quantities have also increased considerably in less developed countries in the last decades, albeit not to the same extent as in the industrialised states.
