Chapter Summary

This chapter elucidates the mono-clausal multi-verb construction types found in the Northern Paiute language of western North America. The field and supporting data for the chapter come mainly from dialects spoken to the north of a major isogloss. The purpose of this discussion is three-fold: 1) to establish the mono-clausal properties of each, 2) to discuss these as developmental properties involving, in the case of converbs, the alignment of necessary morphosyntactic conditions, and 3) to present connections between these two construction types and those already described in detail by way of fitting Northern Paiute multi-verb constructions into a multi-dimensional continuum of development. The chapter explores the possible historical relationship(s) between the distinct multi-verb construction types.
