Chapter Summary

It is widely known that Rashbam repeatedly refers to explanations that conform to the 'way of the world' or to 'human knowledge'. This chapter discusses about two hermeneutical renderings of lefi derekh erets that frame Rashbam's commentary on the legal parts of the book of Exodus. The author might assume that Rashbam's subsequent comments would help us achieve a clearer picture of his intellectual milieu, its interests and his exegetical proposal. Rashbam proposes a two-pronged approach to the study of the Torah each path requiring its own exegetical methodology. Rashi's commentary is the gateway for religious instruction, i.e., the study of the Torah as a 'sacred text,' focusing on the rabbinic understanding of halakhah and aggadah, around which Jewish life is organized.
