Chapter Summary

The division of the Council into a pope faithful and a conciliar party had been revealed in the course of a tumultuous meeting on 7 May 1437. In the following months the Council characterizes Pontanos activities for acceptance as a representative spokesman for the council majority. The embassy mission seeks opinion leadership at the Council, so as to put the process into the Aragonese Milanese interests and to use the conciliar potential threat against Eugenius IV. On 9 October 1437, more than two months after his last appearance, John of Segovia recorded a speech of Lodovico Pontanos against the General Congregation. The argument presented by the Pontano against the Pope led him to be in the nerve center of theological foundation of conciliar courts. The original text of the chapter is in German.
