Chapter Summary

This anthology represents modest samples of origin and creation myths from China's rich ethnic diversity cultures. The stories tell about the origins and beginnings of the universe, human beings, and natural and cultural phenomena. The texts have been collected over the past three decades. Myths or mythical motifs or characters may be similarly shared by more than one ethnic group, since the stories tend to spread over different areas. In this anthology our guidelines have been: (1) in the collection the myths have been named after the specific ethnic group living in the area where the story has been collected. (2) The versions collected here are based on authoritative sources.
