Chapter Summary

This chapter takes care not to class officials as part of a group of military-turned civil administrators simply due to a lack of information. As the title suggests, the purpose of this paper is to ascertain what exactly a title imparts about its holder so as to better understand the roles played by officials involved with the 18th Dynasty military sphere. Thus, although part of the larger discussion, for this article the current author has chosen to draw attention to those officials for whom this is clearly not the case. The prominent appearance of military activities in their monuments can instead be regarded as a reflection of the socio-political circumstances in which they found themselves, and not necessarily as an indication of a formal military career.
