Chapter Summary

In 1950 J.A. Wilson published a footnote citing the &t;notorious carelessness&t; of Egyptian scribal convention in assigning determinatives to foreign names in the standard reference work Ancient Near Eastern Texts. This chapter readdresses the issue of scribal convention in writing foreign names from the perspective of the most widely published event during the Egyptian New Kingdom: the Battle of Kadesh. A statistical analysis of foreign names in the copies of the &t;Literary Record,&t; &t;Bulletin,&t; and &t;Reliefs&t; indicates that the Egyptians were remarkably consistent in their designation of these foreign entities. Further suggestions are given on establishing the Egyptian perspective of foreign names through textual analysis in comparison with archaeological data. The examples: Israel and Canaan, demonstrate the problem in recent scholarship over Egyptian foreign names and, by extension, designations of polities, places, and peoples of the eastern Mediterranean world.

Keywords: Ancient Near Eastern Texts; Battle of Kadesh; bulletin; Canaan; eastern Mediterranean world; Egyptian New Kingdom; foreign name; literary record; reliefs; scribal convention
