Chapter Summary

This front matter section of this book titled The American Road to Capitalism contains the table of contents, a foreword and the acknowledgements. The book is a major contribution to historical scholarship. There are essentially two ways of thinking about history unhistorically. One is to posit a single, universal transhistorical law of change and development. The other is to reduce history to a welter of particularities, all detail and difference without causality or even process, just, in Arnold Toynbee's classic phrase, one damn thing after another.
