This book is a Marxian intervention into the historical debates on the structure and trajectory of the US-economy in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the causes and consequences of the US Civil War and Reconstruction. It seeks not merely to defend, but to contribute to the renewal of historical materialism. The essays in this book are the result of over three decades of intellectual work, and thus embody the evolution of the author's thought on the origins of capitalism and the Civil War in the US.
