Chapter Summary

This chapter falls into two parts. In the first part, Jean Lallot (JL) presents some general observations on the use of the historical present in Thucydides' Histories. These observations are based on the three documents, drawn up by Odile Mortier-Waldschmidt, Sophie Vassilaki and JL, and appended to the present chapter: "Verbes attestés au PH chez Thucydide", "Principaux verbes non attestés au PH", "Répertoire des PH en contexte". JL gives some figures that bring to light which verbs occur in the HP with markably high frequency and thus show, as it were, an "affinity" with the HP. JL's hypotheses being rather general, it was suggested that each contributor to the book writes his or her own interpretation of the HPs found in Thucydides' Book.
