Chapter Summary

This section presents the list of inventory sources of the documents of this book titled Legal Documents from the Judean Desert. The translations of the legal texts presented in the book attempts to retain as faithfully as possible their original linguistic register, discourse structure and tone. This was no easy task, given the character of Arabic legal discourse, which often displays a peculiar admixture of literary and colloquial Arabic elements, such as vernacular rhyming expressions and legal maxims, abrupt shifts from direct to indirect speech and a pragmatic modality conducive to minimal resort to formal discourse markers.
