Chapter Summary

Cyprus had the privilege of hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference held recently. An Undefinable and vague, yet unmistakable, bond of common attitudes and sense of values is being shared, so that there can be a feeling of being at home with each other and speak to and understand each other with much more ease than with other groups of countries and with individuals of different cultures. In the declaration of Commonwealth principles, adopted in 1971, the Commonwealth of Nations is defined as "A voluntary association of independent sovereign states, each responsible for its own policies, consulting and cooperating in the common interests of their peoples and in the promotion of international understanding and world peace". Unity and a sound sense of values within the Commonwealth gives them all, large and small countries, strength and confidence and enhances their ability to cope with difficult situations.
