Chapter Summary

The development of Valaam Monastery into a famous spiritual centre began in earnest in the last decades of the eighteenth century and reached its zenith during the latter half of the nineteenth century. During the process the reciprocal relationship between the power structures and the re-established monastery took various intertwining forms, reaching from practical and administrational issues to processes that created and consolidated the ideological meanings and image formation of the monastery. The concrete and ideological networking around Valaam also took place on a regional level. Most of the ideas and claims concerning Valaam's history have been presented as possibilities or ideas carried on by vague 'tradition'.
