Chapter Summary

This book is an attempt to analyze and understand numerous aspects and features of the popular image of Valaam's past. The book's introduction presents the starting point of the study. In Chapter 1 the development of Valaam in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is outlined. Chapter 2 examines the historiographical efforts in Valaam, contextualized in the growing interest in national history writing. Chapter 3 concentrates on the general claims regarding Valaam's origins and initial phases, such as the date and circumstances surrounding its establishment. In Chapter 4 the formation of the cult of Sergei and German is examined all the way from the 16th century to the 19th century. The book concludes with a discussion that aims to unite all the aspects examined and to form an overall picture of the image formation of Valaam Monastery within the context of contemporary developments, politics and ideas.
