Chapter Summary

This chapter will briefly survey the state of commerce in the Indian Ocean and the Portuguese involvement there. An assessment of the Portuguese in the East also needs to be re-evaluated in terms of the empire's overall survival. The chapter will explore the state of the Estado's finances and the kind of activities the Estado was involved in by examining a detailed official report outlining receipts and expenses in the first quarter of the eighteenth century. It provides the registers of the Overseas Council to the concerns and preoccupation of the Crown. this chapter will assert that official-traders of the Estado, despite being associated with nostalgia and titles, were not purely opera bouffe but contributed to the empire's fight for survival. The chapter briefly touches on the indigenous merchants who were co-opted. Pissurlancar highlighted that many Hindu Goan merchants who helped in the capacity of negotiators.
