Chapter Summary

This preliminary material presents the table of contents, acknowledgments, foreword, list of maps and tables, and abbreviations that occur in the book Portuguese Enterprise in the East: Survival in the Years 1707-1757. Living in the twentieth century, and watching how the Portuguese were one of the last to give up their colonies intrigued the author further to explore the topic of the book. The history of colonialism in Asia is usually considered to consist of succeeding layers: Portuguese, then Dutch, then British, with the French and other lesser players intruding on the margins. The book talks about the Portuguese Empire in Asia and the efforts in commercial revival.

Keywords: Asia; British; colonialism; Dutch; French; Portuguese enterprise
