Chapter Summary

Atman Ramchalaon was born in Triolet, Mauritius. One of his childhood friends was born in Chagos. "He told me that he used to fish with his grandpa and that they caught fish which tasted like meat," Ramchalaon relates. Ramchalaon studied at a film academy in Paris and California and moved to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where he received funding to make a documentary on Diego Garcia, which was broadcast in the Netherlands, UK, Belgium, Mauritius, India, and the US. For the production of the documentary, Ramchalaon spoke with a Chagossian man who was born in the Salomon islands and worked from the age of fifteen. In Chagos, he used to sail with his father from island to island, and knew the whole region. For that reason, a secret Anglo-American team asked him in 1965/66 to join them in a survey to determine whether Diego Garcia would be suitable for military purposes.
