Chapter Summary

This chapter deals with reign of King Wamba. Here the term is loosely used in the sense Franco Moretti had applied to literary genres, that is: &t;problem-solving devices, which address a contradiction of their environment, offering an imaginary resolution by means of their formal organization&t;. It confined itself to the analysis of only part of that discourse; that of texts commonly held to be chronicles. All of the chronicles analysed in the course of this study take the form of prose, although since not all chronicles are necessarily written in prose, prose cannot be a constitutive requirement in chronicle discourse. If, for Hayden White, a historical treatment of events consists of the attempt to read sequence in place of what appears to be mere seriality (the chronicle), then chronicles cannot be histories.
