Chapter Summary

This chapter presents the Song of Songs, of Solomon. The expression Song of Songs' is a superlative along the lines of holy of holies', king of kings'. It is the equivalent of saying the most beautiful song'. The fact that Song' is used in the singular is a discreet suggestion of the unity of the composition. The title of the Egyptian Songs of Love, in so many ways the nearest parallel to the Song of Songs, is by contrast: “The beginning of the joyful Songsâ€.
