Chapter Summary

In the palistrophic structure of the Jacob-cycle, Canaan II (Gen 32–35) stands opposite Canaan I (Gen 25–28) and brings the cycle to a close. Gen 33:18–20 can be seen as a conclusion of Jacob's return to the Promised Land and as a bridge to the episode with the Shechemites. So many scholars have commented on the complex origins and developmental history of Gen 32–35 that it is difficult to summarize succinctly the multitude of source- and redaction critical insights that have been generated. This chapter demonstrates that material possessions and associated attitudes and actions are key-ingredients to the narrative. It tests the validity of the various proposals that were derived in earlier chapters. Many things that have been discovered so far will be confirmed, but there are some new twists as well.
