Chapter Summary

After the exploration of the texts of Utpaladeva and Abhina-vagupta devoted to identity, difference and otherness, it is clear that all these problems without exception, the Pratyabhijñā provide, in essence, that is to say, despite the complexity of the controversies in which he slips, one and only one solution: freedom (svātantrya) of consciousness. There is, however, no real discontinuity between dialectic and henomenological aspects of the approach; in both cases, as the analyses are shown, the role of the reason is essentially cathartic. It is not a question then for Utpaladeva and Abhinavagupta to invoke the transcendent freedom of god through unaccessible nature, but on the contrary, to use the experience that the empirical subject made of its own freedom. The original text of the chapter is in French.
