Chapter Summary

This chapter discusses a source that represents both manuscript and performance and focuses on more dynamic, multi-layered view of public opinion and on the challenges of method and epistemology, with which students of literary texts are confronted when they set out to study the interaction between literature and public opinion. The chapter unravels the interplay between fact and fiction, between historical and literary sources in the process of formation of opinion, and points out the problems encountered in this attempt. The source under consideration is an incomplete, handwritten description in Dutch of a theatrical performance that took place in Madrid in 1623 before members of the Spanish royal family and Charles, Prince of Wales. The chapter finally deals with a question of a more methodological nature: What is the status of this document as a source for understanding the interplay between literature and the early modern public opinion process?.
