Chapter Summary

The Treaty of Giles of Rome met with considerable success and represented a model and an important source for many authors. The De regimine principum, as we shall see, circulated among different groups of readers, clergy and laity, in academia, in the court of King, in the aristocratic circles, but also in those of the urban bourgeoisie. The numerous translations, made in almost all Vernacular languages of medieval Western Europe, demonstrate the interest in this treaty. This chapter presents the translations briefly, to better understand the place of French translations. The French versions of Treaty of Rome Gilles are part of broader movement of translation and writing of French texts, which are developed from the XIIIe century. The movement of French translations participated directly to the assertion of role of the state, new at the end of Middle Age. The original text of the chapter is in French.
