Chapter Summary

The way Gilles de Rome approaches the subject, however, remains different in several respects from that of his master in the fact that it is more secular: Giles of Rome deals with the state as a ground reality and does not mention of the relationship between temporal and spiritual jurisdictions. The French translation of Henri de Gauci proposes a simplified version of thought of Giles of Rome and its sources. Guillaume integrates in his translation the concrete examples of everyday life, which he seems to have been himself the direct witness. The translation made for Charles V is similar to that of Guillaume; it remains independent. The precise identity of Gilles Deschamps remains uncertain. In his prologue, Jean Wauquelin appears as the author of the translation. The last listed translation is managed in Ham manuscript. 672 of State Library of Berlin. The original text of the chapter is in French.
