Chapter Summary

In this chapter the editor has the great pleasure of sharing a city, if not a department, with Dennis Showalter for eight years. Dennis was by then a legendary visiting professor and frequent guest lecturer at the United States Air Force Academy, his first job out of graduate school. That Dennis is a generous scholar who is always reaching his hand to others, from high school students to generals, will come as no surprise to anyone who knows him. Anyone who regularly attends the annual meeting of the Society for Military History knows the role Dennis has played in that organization. Having once served as the Society's president, Dennis played a key role in making it the positive intellectual environment it is today.
