Chapter Summary

This chapter on spiritual transformation is divided into part 1 and 2 along with a brief introduction of both the parts. Part 1 argues the need and rationale for an alternative framework for conceptualizing the nature of spiritual transformation than the presently dominant meaning-system approach and then outlines general features of an alternative moral intuitionist approach. It also outlines arguments for the systematic integration of contemporary moral psychology with the psychology of spiritual transformation and suggested that moral psychology should become an important part of the psychology of religion and spirituality. Second, as background for an alternative model, the article outlined four recent trends in moral psychology. Finally, part 1 sketches three propositions that outline a specific model of spiritual transformation that derives from but also extends the Social Intuitionist Model. Part 2 outlines a personality-based, process model of spiritual transformation conceptualized within a moral intuitionist and social functionalist paradigm.

Keywords: moral intuitionist model; psychology of religion; Social Intuitionist Model (SIM); spiritual transformation
