Chapter Summary

In the modern age the amount of digital information generated is extraordinary. Every interaction with the Internet and with social networks, every credit card transaction, every bank withdrawal, and every magazine subscription is recorded digitally and linked to specific users. This chapter discusses specific examples of technology affecting individual privacy that have developed in recent years or have become more sophisticated. The examples described are: identity cards, biometrics, communications, surveillance (video surveillance, closed circuit television (CCTV), unmanned aerial systems (UAS), internet surveillance, workplace surveillance, international surveillance, global positioning system (GPS) technology and radio frequency Identification (RFID) technology), and social networks. A combination of state regulation, as well as legal protections for the individual against both governmental and private parties, must be devised in order to keep up with the technology that makes possible unfettered invasions of privacy.

Keywords:biometrics; communications; global positioning system (GPS); identity cards; individual privacy; radio frequency identification (RFID); social networks; unmanned aerial systems (UAS)
