Chapter Summary

Healthy fish populations are known to provide important fundamental and demand-derived ecosystem services to human societies. Human activities have severely affected the integrity of freshwater ecosystems worldwide and this unfortunately also holds for the inland aquatic systems of Suriname. In the densely populated Coastal Plain of Suriname, wetland habitat degradation is associated with agriculture, bauxite and oil exploitation, and the expansion of the city of Paramaribo. In the dry season, when the swamps dry up and most swamp fishes are found in the canals, the canals are very popular with sport fishers who target mainly hei-ede-kwikwi. In the Interior of Suriname, habitat degradation is mainly associated with bauxite and gold mining. In order to provide energy to the aluminum smelters at Paranam, a dam was constructed across the Suriname River at Afobaka in 1964, resulting in the large hydroelectric Brokopondo Reservoir.
