Chapter Summary

Suriname has a rich inland fish fauna that is readily recognized as related to the 'hottest', most diverse freshwater fish fauna on planet Earth, that is that of the Amazon River. Most freshwater fish species of Suriname live in the flowing waters of rivers and streams of the interior and many species are endemic to a single river system. This chapter presents the key anatomical characteristics of the (sub)families of the freshwater fish species found in Suriname.
