Chapter Summary

This conclusory chapter of the book presents the quest for addressing the global environmental problematique, which comprises a system of legal and institutional framework that can be characterized under the rubric of international environmental governance. United Nations Environment programme (UNEP), being UN's environmental conscience, has the best credentials to spearhead this vital process. The first Universal Session of UNEP Governing Council (2013) squarely underscored the application of incremental approach, revitalizing the mandate of the UNEP's Governing Council by renaming it as the UN Environment Assembly as a deliberative global environmental forum with a universal membership, and UNEP to be provided with adequate, stable and predictable funding. As the plenary organ of the UN, the General Assembly will need to step in to address the complexity of the institutional dimensions of international environmental governance.
